Submissions

nr1 welcomes submissions of written work from writers who live in Norwich, or Norfolk, or anywhere else in the world which can be classed as "a small city cluttered with malls and derelict office blocks."

We are open to: fiction, non-fiction, poetry, news stories, articles, pieces of local interest, ten pound notes, unsoiled linen and strange new forms of communication. Preferably the first six things, though.  Or the second last.

ImageWhat We Like: Writing with wit, passion, with a degree of elegance. Writing which has something to say about small city life. Writing which makes us laugh, or which moves us in some way. All that  in under 2,500 words. Basically, anything better than what's here.  Come on, now.  How hard can that be?  Also, generally - the Take Five café, jazz, baby. The mighty Canaries. The Ten Bells. The old-school Belle Vue barmaids. Nando's. Girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes. TK Maxx.  First Buses numbers 19 and 20.  Indie rock.

Here's the deal: If we like your work, we'll publish it. If we really like your work, we'll publish it in the print magazine as well as online. We don't pay contributors at this stage, as we run on a budget of limited goodwill and 68p, but you will receive a complimentary copy of the magazine to show your family and friends, and to improve the odds on you pulling that Take Five barmaid/man you've been boring with tales of how one day you will be published in print. That's our way of saying we love you. If we publish three pieces of work, we'll buy you a beer of your choice. If we publish five pieces, you win a night out with Leanne.

You can send submissions to us at . You should, you really really should. And please tell us if the piece has been previously published so you don't get us sued or beaten with clubs. Once submitted, we reserve the right to archive the work. Copyright reverts to you, the author.  It's your baby.  We just want to show it off for a while.  You can paste the text into an email.  We don't use attachments.  Not since Matt got that weird-looking rash.

If you want to join the nr1 team, and get involved in designing, editing and distributing the print magazine, send us an email and tell us why you're fabulous. Should be easy for a bright young thing like you. Look at you. Goddammit, you're gorgeous!

Sorry? Did you say you were interested in advertising in the magazine? Step right this way and have your wallet handy.  We're cheaper than you think, you know... and yup, that's pretty cheap...
