Progress
Written by Leanne Whitehead
Saturday, 17 December 2005
Image Wowed and slightly stunned by the power of her award-winning poem in the recent nr1 2005 poetry competition, we commissioned the Larkman Laureate, Norwich's own Leanne Whitehead, to act as the voice of misunderstood youth in iambic pentameter.  Warning - the poem she has written for us, entitled simply 'progress,' may make some readers experience clenching.

Author's note: I’m pig bleeding sick of hearing people banging on about why we ought to stop having more new things because of history, like yeah, everything should stay like it is for ever, and that. You know what I’m talking about and I bet you agree with me and all. Unless you’re one of them conversationists. If you are, this is for you. Stick this in your lentil pie and bake it, and then get your bleeding hair cut hippie.

Rubbish

Some more new shops is just what Norwich need
Don’t give it all that, like you don’t agree
We need a new McDonalds, Burger King
A bigger JD Sports, a new QD
I can’t believe they didn’t make it bigger
That great big garden's asking for the plough
Who needs a park? And shitty city walls
are going to fall down sometime. Why not now?
People say that ain't got “local flavour,”
or “character,” and “do we need more stores?
Ain’t Castle Mall and Riverside enough?”
If you’re one of these twats, well, up yours.

Wicked

Think about it. Why go to the castle
To get shit bored about dead queens and kings?
The new mall's free to get in, and it's warmer,
And you can fill your bag with shiny things.
So crush the Castle, build a huge car park,
And make the Cathedral another mall.
Not only would it be more bloody useful,
More people would go on Sundays, and all.
